Friday Five: Fireworks Edition

This week the F5 is presented by Sally (a Brit!)...

1. Barbeque's or picnics (or are they essentially the same thing?)
Location, location, location. Although the food can be exactly the same, a BBQ is in the backyard and a picnic is somewhere else! (Speaking of picnics and food, my grandma made the best potato salad in the world, the perfection of which has never been duplicated.)

2. The park/ the lake/ the beach or staying at home simply being?
Here in Longview the big yearly event is the "Go 4th" celebration down at the lake which includes a big flea market and impressive fireworks display. It is also verrrrry interesting to people watch at this time. (Read whatever you like between the lines.)

3. Fireworks- love 'em or hate 'em?
I love laying/lying (never could figure out that verb) on a blanket down at the lake watching the professional fireworks display. I also like watching some of the nicer (i.e. bigger) home fireworks. However, I do not like firecrackers. (I have seen too many nasty eye injuries from those.)

4. Parades- have you ever taken part- share a memory...
I've never taken part in a 4th of July parade that I can recall. (And, sad to say, the 4th of July parade here in town is pretty lame. Mostly old cars putt-putting along.)

5. Time for a musical interlude- if you could sum up holidays in a piece of music what would it be?
The only song I can think of is "Holiday Road" (from National Lampoon's Vacation). It says "summer!" to me. Here's the original theatrical trailer:

I agree with you whole-heartedly on the firecrackers.

We've never gone to see our town's 4th of July parade. Usually, I'm just crashing on the 4th--which is what I'm doing today.

You lie on the blanket. You lay plates out on the blanket for the picnic. When you lay something, you are acting upon it. (Think "a" for acting upon.) When you lie, you are accomplishing the action of your own initiative. (Think "i" for initiative.) Sorry for the grammar talk. I taught English for a year and have edited for nearly 20. Sometimes it's just a kneejerk reaction. (I have one of the few dogs in America who doesn't know the command "Lay down!" He only knows "Lie down.")

Happy 4th.

Yes, you can BBQ anywhere. I shall be doing hotdogs in the microwave today, with watermelon! (Not BBQ'd watermelon.....watermelon*on*the*side)

What memories with that video. Poor Christie Brinkley is probably not having the best 4th this year. She'd probably enjoy seeing your blog today. To remember happier times.

Happy 4th! I was proud to stand with you too. ;)

PG, Yep, Christie (an avid reader of my blog!!) is not having the best time as of late... (I think she maybe should have stayed with Billy Joel.)

Sounds nice especially on the blanket watching the fireworks. I could be there luring all the mosquitos away from your family.

Nice choice about Holiday Road, that's a classic. If you're interested in having that song for a car music-mix I have it both on CD and my computer. You won't find it anywhere on iTunes or Rhapsody or anywhere else. I bought an old CD that they don't make anymore that has it.

Song I always play on the 4th of July is "Saturday in the Park" by Chicago.

1) it sounds like sunny day summer music
2) lyrics are: Saturday, In the Park, I think it was the 4th of July
